Re: TIMETABLE FOR 2016/2017POST-UTME SCREENING

OFFICE OF THE INFORMATION OFFICER

STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT

UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA

Re: TIMETABLE FOR 2016/2017POST-UTME SCREENING

The attention of the Office Information Office of the Students' Union Government has been called to a timetable circulating online as regards this year's conduct of Post-UTME by our great citadel of learning. I must say categorically that this is the second time the same timetable is being circulated through social media. The first time, I did my best to refute the claim and so I am doing again.

Please note that the timetable circulating online is a carefully edited version of last year's Post-UTME timetable. Also, if you check the dates, days and months, you will observe there are so many errors in the write-up. I see it as the handiwork of some bloggers desperate to gain attention and thus increase visit to their sites as this is a period of anxiety on the part of aspirants.

Please ignore any announcement of post-UTME that is neither on the university's website: www.unn.edu.ng nor on the SUG Web Blog: www.unnmaxinfo.blogspot.com. If there be any news on the university's Post-UTME screening, we will be here to inform you promptly as it is our desire to welcome you to the Den of Lions as soon as possible.

Also, while you await that, let me also advise you that despite the whole confusion about the purported scrapping of post-UTME by the Federal Government, you should continue to prepare hard and smart for the screening. Do not relax, else you are taken unawares.

On behalf of the Students' Union Government, I wish you good success in your academic pursuit.

FG DENIES SCRAPPING NYSC, SAYS IT'S RUMUORS

Although this might be old news, according to media reports and rumours that were spread on the

Internet, you will recall that it was circulated that the Federal government had scrapped the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in a bid to cut down spending. However, the Federal Government has denied the rumours circulating the internet about disbanding and scrapping the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC)

Contrary to the rumour renting the social media that the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC), established since 1975 by then Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (retd), has been summarily disbanded and scrapped by President Muhammadu Buhari, alongside post Jamb tertiary institutions exam, UMTE, authoritative Villa source has promptly denied such as unfounded and legally illogical.“NYSC is a creation of the law. Only another law can repeal it.” – Garba Shehu (Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity).

SECURITY NAB SOME STUDENTS FOR PIRACY

Late last week, some students were apprehended by the University's security team for the sales of pirated copies of the Natural science workbook at a cheaper price. The security team was seen in the Faculty theatre of social sciences searching and ransacking students for those in possession of the fake workbook and also trying to get information on where and who it was purchased from. As of now, Co-coordinators and Lecturers in charge of Natural Science are now asking for the receipt during submission as a proof that it was actually bought from the school's bookshop.

FREEDOM IN OUR BONES: A HISTORY OF SUG, UNN (1960 to 2004)

THE PRESENT IS THE KEY TO THE FUTURE… that is a quote from historians and archaeologists. That said, a society without a history is a people without a future.

You are probably guessing what I mean by all these quotes. Well, I will not keep you wondering for too long as I present you a unique book on THE HISTORY OF THE STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT, UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA FROM 1960 TO 2004.

-          How much of the history of SUG in UNN do you know?

-          How did the university come about names like Isa-Kaita, Eni-Njoku, SUB, etc.?

-          Who was the first SUG President in UNN?

-          How did House proceedings and Senate sittings of previous years go?

These and many more you will find in this exciting book. Before you tell me you don't need it, lemme ask you the following questions:

-          Are you a UNN Aspirant?

-          Are you a student in any tertiary institution?

-          Are you a Lion, Lioness, Superlion or Superlioness?

-          Are you an aspirant for any post in the SUG?

-          Do you at the moment nurse any ambition for your faculty, department or association?

-          Do you have any hope of becoming a leader in whatever capacity either in school or outside?

If your answer to ANY of the questions above is YES, then you need a copy of this book.

Copies will be available at EKPO CONVOCATION ARENA, venue of the ICPC Anti-Corruption Forum Inauguration tomorrow, Monday, June 13th, 2016 from 11:00am @N1,000.00 only. (Remember ALL STUDENT LEADERS ARE EXPECTED AT THE EVENT)

MR. & MISS UNN: Between the UNN KINGS and QUEENS FORUM and the SUG

Fellow Lions and Lionesses, it is important I keep you informed as to details of things going on in the Union so as to enable you make wise decisions. The House of Representatives, haven sat on Friday, 10th June, 2016 resolved to suspend the event mentioned above due to so many reasons bothering on so many allegations against the organizers and the show since its inception. This was passed across to the students yesterday but due to interventions from so many quarters, the whole Students' Union Government comprising the Executive Council, the Senate and the House of Representatives had to call for an emergency sitting to discuss the issue on ground and to reconsider the stand of the House on the matter. This on its own is an unusual favour as it is constitutionally wrong to call for House sitting in less than 24 hours after the previous one. The constitution says that there must be at least a 48 hour notice to officials before any sitting. This was breached so as to grant the parties another opportunity for negotiation.

At the second sitting which held on Saturday, 11th June, 2016, the Senate and the House of Representatives unanimously reached a resolution that the decision of the House of Representatives be upheld. Thus, the show remained suspended.

Reactions from the members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate made it clear that they stood by the decision of the House despite all pleas due to the inciting words from some persons. For instance, an Mc at the awareness programme for the event at the University Stadium in the morning of Saturday, 11th June, 2016 as quoted to have said, "This show must hold tonight no matter what the SUG does". While another person was said to have lent his voice to it by saying, "The SUG cannot do anything". These and many more angered even the Senators and Honourable members who were willing to plead on behalf of the organizers of the event and consequently resulted in the resolution.

The organizers on their part claimed that the SUG ouse of HHouse of Representatives suspended the show because they were not given free tickets to the event as requested. In her response, a member of the House of Representatives said that the organizers were communicated through writing about the conditions for the House's approval of the event but no response was given by them. Thus, after waiting for about two weeks for their response, the House decided on the matter as deemed fit by it.

It was further learnt that several allegations had prior to the House's intervention leveled against the UNN KINGS and QUEENS Forum. For instance, the runner-up for last year's pageantry was not paid until Friday, 10th June, 2016 while a winner from a previous edition has till date not got her money prize. She however said she has thus far decided to remain silent because she does not want to pull any strings against them yet. These and many other allegations, according to the House of Representatives informed the decision of the House to suspend the event. Also, section 51, subsection e article II and IV of the Union's Constitution empowers the Director of Socials to hold such events. Thus, the continuous hosting of the event by the UNN KINGS and QUEENS Forum cannot continue. As at the time of filing this report, the House of Representatives has set in motion modalities to ensure that this error is corrected, not just for the present but for the future.

However, it was learnt that the Dean of Student Affairs ordered that the proposed venue for the event be opened as it had all along remained under locks and keys. So at 8:15pm, Ekpo Convocation Arena was opened for use by the Kings and Queens Forum. One thing that made the Dean to go against the decision of the joint House is the fact that he came personally to plead with the House to let the show hold but more than a two-third majority of both Houses voted against the event, thus making it a resolution of the House with the support of the Senate.

UNN ASPIRANT WRITES A GRIPPING ARTICLE REACTING TO POST UTME CANCELLATION

A Unn aspirant has decided to openly express his detest about the scrapping out of Post-Utme. Indeed his write up is thought provoking and absorbing. Read the article below.

Minister of Education Steer Clear of My Education

For fear of being victimized, I’ll choose to be anonymous.
When I heard about the scraping of post UTME, I did not know whether to be happy or sad. Truth be told, we young people are tired of the rigours of having to write two very tough examinations just to gain admission into higher institutions of our choice. Although this is my second JAMB, somehow I have this feeling that if not for this bottleneck that was placed in our education system in the year 2005, yours truly would have been an undergraduate by now. Examination, they say is not a true test of knowledge, but the worst nightmare is to organize a shoddy exam. I have written series of examination, right from my primary school days to the time I wrote WASSCE and emerged as the best graduating student, one thing I’ve come to find out is that people don’t pass exam by chance. However, what happened to me in this year’s JAMB is what I am yet to comprehend.
Last year, I applied for Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. When I wrote JAMB and had a score of 270, I sat down and took a closer look at the individual score I made in different subjects; I smiled because the result was a reflection of my ability. From my very tight schedule, I had to make out time to start preparing for the post UTME. Remember that it was the same year I wrote WASSCE and NECO. Honestly, I lost a lot of weight, and when Post UTME result came out, I made 250. My average for both JAMB and PUTME last year was 260. Guess what, that score was not enough to give me Law because UNN had 287 as their cut-off mark. For those of you that wrote JAMB last year, recall that JAMB came up with this idea of redistribution. That is, moving students according to their score to other schools that have less applicants. I was very happy when I heard about the idea. Of course I was happy because I knew that with my 270 JAMB score, I would have a shot at UNN, my dream school. My happiness was short-lived because JAMB later did not implement that policy. I guess that’s what they are trying to enforce this year by getting the Minister of Education, tell us, on the 2nd of this month that Post UTME has been (or should be) scraped. In my opinion, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde is in bed with Mallam Adamu Adamu. They have both orchestrated this wonderful plan. Truth be told, this is a good plan but the timing is very wrong.
Let me take you down memory lane. This year’s JAMB received a lot of criticism. Students complained that the exercise was badly organized. Some aggrieved students even took to the street to vent their anger. Unfortunately, Prof. Ojerinde who, I thought should know better came out and claimed that the demonstration that was carried out by students was orchestrated by aggrieved CBT centres that had their contract cancelled. Prof., you and I know that was a fat lie. By blaming CBT centres and lesson centres instead of accepting the ineptitude of your system and the laxity of your workers, you lost the respect I used to have for you. Prof. let me ask you a question; do you think we are fools? Yes, I know that an average Nigerian youth does not read but the truth remains that we are not fools. I may not have gotten admission into the university but I know whom I am! I am an intelligent Nigerian youth who works hard every day. God knows that I’m better than my counterparts in most part of the world, and I’m not a fool. Having tasted success in my secondary school days, I know what it is like to be a winner. Unfortunately, JAMB decided to make me look like a fool when, on March 10, I wrote JAMB at a centre in Anambra State only to come home two days after and have JAMB send to me a text message that states that I scored 232. How is that possible? I thought. After being depressed for some days, I went online to look at the details of my result. I shouted when I saw that I was given 49 in English. This is not my result, I told mum who was with me in the room.
Well, when after a month I accepted the result that was sent to me by JAMB, I vowed to do my best, in terms of preparation to make sure that I prove my worth in post UTME when the time comes. Because I’m a go-getter, I had since got a Post UTME Past Question Paper and have been marrying my textbooks ever since. So, for Mallam Adamu Adamu to wake up one morning and tell us that he has scraped Post UTME is just unacceptable, especially at this point. In my opinion, I’ll rather they scrap JAMB and allow schools conduct examination for prospective students. JAMB as a body is messing up. They should take a cue from WAEC. Remember that Post UTME was introduced to clean up the mess up by JAMB. If the Federal Government wants JAMB to assume her constitutional role, they should first of all return her to her previous glory.
I gave up a JAMB score of 270 and a post UTME score of 250 because I believed that I’ll do better this year. My friend had advised me to buy a supplementary form and shop into English and Literary Studies last year but I told him that I’d make the merit list for Law this year. I had studied very hard for JAMB but they almost killed my zeal by sending me another person’s result. Just when it seemed I’ve gotten over it, Adamu Adamu now wants to put sand in my garri. God will judge you all! One calendar year of staying at home has taught me a lot of lessons, but trust me, unlike last year, I can settle for another course in UNN but God will punish anyone who reassigns me to any other school that is not University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Apart from the issue of proximity, I’m obsessed about the school.
Finally, Mallam Adamu Adamu, if really you want to scrap Post UTME, I suggest that this year’s JAMB be remarked by a neutral body and the results obtained be checked with what JAMB sent to candidates. I also suggest you call Prof. Ojerinde to come and explain why 40 marks were added to some candidates and were later removed from that of some people. JAMB had a lot of issues and I put it to you that scraping Post UTME shouldn’t be an option until JAMB is brought to a standard.
PLS SHARE UNTIL IT GETS TO MALLAM ADAMU ADAMU.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A LION OF REPUTE!!!

Today I am honoured to tell/remind the world that a champion was birthed this day some years back. His place of origin is not as important to me as his place in my heart. A brother, a colleague, a friend, a great inspiration.

Brother, you stood by me amidst my turmoil; where I was inefficient you covered up for me, making it seem I was very efficient, and you never asked to be mentioned, instead, you preferred to work behind the scene while I shone on the podium. Thank you. While I may not be able to offer you anything material in appreciation, I pray you take this little gift of proclaiming you to my world as the greatest gift I can offer you today… tomorrow holds a better plan.

May the Lord who made our paths cross never cease to link you to men and women of honour who will never rest till you have reached your goal in life.

Happy Birthday Azor Richard, Class Rep., ARTS EDUCATION Class 2017.

Archaeology and Tourism Class 2017 celebrates you!

Art Education Class 2017 celebrates you!!

I, on behalf of the Students' Union Government, University of Nigeria, Nsukka rejoice with you.

May your day be longer and more blessed than those of your fathers.

Ad multos annos.

FOBSAA FAILS TO DELIVER

June 3rd was amaze balls in the campus of University of Nigeria, Nsukka as three captivating events took place at different venues simultaneously. For those who were vibrant enough to grace these occasions certainly had suspense fascinating fun but unfortunately that can’t be said for all of them.

The Fobbsa games which took place at Jimbaz quadrangle and was meant to start at 7pm but commenced at 10pm ended up not being hypnotizing and eye catching as expected as the turnout by students was regrettably disappointing. Another disheartening factor that made the event less fun was the fact that the program was officiated without no proper order of events  unlike the Faculty of pharmaceutical sciences’ Bon-fire which was everything enthralling and captivating as Dj Fabulous put his skills to good use by equipping the students with good music to dance and gyrate to. A big kudos to the planning committee of this said bon-fire for providing students immeasurable pleasure and music satisfaction.

Finally the most talked about event of the night which happened to be the Mass comm's night. Stay glued to this page as more juicy details on the said night would be brought to you and officially introduce to you to the new crowned queen on campus, Miss Mass Comm.

REPORTS FROM THE HOSTELS

News reaching us from Awolowo Hostel has it that the hostel now has constant supply of water in the toilets and bathroom facilities, thanks to a Students' Union Government that has the interest of the students at heart and a Vice Chancellor that cares and listens. We are however not unaware of the problems facing the hostel and Eni-Njoku Hostel as regards power supply. Efforts are in place to get these things settled in no distant time.

Also, as the renovation of hostels continues, Alvan Boys will in no distant time have a renovated hostel. This is as a result of the award of the contract for this purpose and the contractor is set to start work from Monday, 6th June, 2016.

Re: JAMB’S CUT OFF AND SCRAPPING OF POST-UTME

OFFICE OF THE INFORMATION OFFICER

STUDENTS' UNIION GOVERNMENT

UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA

It is no longer rumour that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has decided to bring an end to the conduct of post-UTME by all tertiary institutions. However, it is important to note that this order is billed to take effect from next year (2017). Thus, it is important that you are not misinformed about this matter.

As concerns the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, we are doing our best to get accurate information from the university authority as concerns the university's stand on the matter. This will help us inform you appropriately. Pending that, we advise that all aspirants of the university continue with their preparations for the post-UTME exercise for this year while praying hard that whatever the decision of the university is, it will be for the good of all.

As regards cut-off mark for admission, we are also working hard to get a concrete response on that so as not to mislead aspirants and their loved ones. As soon as we have a the right information on this, we will get back to you promptly.

Still wishing you all success in all your endeavours.
