NEW YEAR MESSAGE

OFFICE OF THE INFORMATION OFFICER
STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA

NEW YEAR MESSAGE

With a heart filled with joy and gladness I welcome all our great Lions and Lionesses into the new year, especially the new ones whose success was announced through the recently updated admission lists. May the Lord make us all more successful than we have been in 2016.

So many things marked our coexistence in 2016.
Together we fought gallantly through the hurdles of electioneering and campaigns
Together we struggled through academic and non-academic hurdles,
Together we faced scarcity and the pains of the economic recession
Together we rejoiced at the provision of street lights on campus by our amiable Vice Chancellor, Prof. B. C. Ozumba
The extensions for course registrations
The battle for the reversal of increased school fees
The many programs and packages of the Students' Union Government like
-The Inter Hostel Tournaments
-The Inter Faculty Debate and its accompanying Essay Competition
-The Inter Campus Tournament (Ozumba Cup)
-The Reawaken the Giant and its accompanying Scholarship to 50 Students
--The SUG Week and its accompanying Skill Acquisitions, Cultural Day and other activities
-Student Empowerment Programs of various types and scopes
-etc.
Together we passed through the pains of seeing our other half (UNEC) suspended for a while like a man paralysed on one side, until the Healing Powers of Reawaken the Giant gave a final touch to the efforts of many comrades and mediators.
(Off Records) Together we did some online businesses that brought a little life to our dry pockets
Together we celebrated the wedding of one of our own, a mother of the Union (Mrs. Joy Chinaza (Nebo) Okpala
Together we scaled mountains and valleys of challenges too numerous to be mentioned.
And here we are, still waxing stronger and more united
We had serious issues threatening our unity and oneness
We also suffered the loss of some promising colleagues, friends and partners
But through it all, we have remained faithful to that one thing we all have in common
The Lion Republic. The Den Our Home.

As we march into the new year, I enjoin us to do so with a resolve to shun anything that threatens our common course.
To do away with anything that threatens the peaceful and conducive environment we have thus far created for ourselves
To always remain law abiding and responsible occupants of the Den till the appointed time when we bid her farewell

This administration may not have met all your expectations, but we can say of a truth, WE DID OUR BEST.
From the President and his executives
To the Senate President and his senators
To the Speaker, House of Representatives and his Honourable Members
To the Chief Judge and his council of judges
To the Hall Governors and their Hall Officials and Wing Reps
To the Igwe, his Lolo and the Traditional Council
To the Faculty Presidents and their Officials
To the Departmental Presidents and their Officials
To the Presidents and Leaders of various associations and clubs (dependent and independent)
To the Class Reps
To the Great Nigerian Students

Together we all contributed our quota to the further development of our Union as is expected of every new government.
And in case you have not noticed, our days in office are numbered.

It is not unusual that we have various prophetic utterances for the year at a time like this. So, on the assumption that you must have heard and said amen to a lot of them, I will prefer instead to make mine a word of prayer.
I therefore employ you to join me as we together resound this resolution prayerfully:

In glory and splendor
Against all odds
We shall march through the year 2017
With the majesty of a king in the midst of his army
To be daunted by no foe
And haunted by no fear
So help us God

Amen

Yours in the Den

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RT. HON. MEDLIN ELOCHUKWU

While preparing my handover note, I stumbled upon a record too glaring to be ignored. It is about the exploits of a lady who stands out in the midst of her peers. I will save you the details except for this highlight.
A member, SUG House of Representatives, 2014/2015 Session, serving the Nigerian Students with great zeal and passion for her office and the interest of her constituency. When she is committed to your success, you can rest assured she will never betray you.
With wonderful friends and a strong army of political stalwarts around her, she is ever dogged and strong, delivering on that for which she is called.
It is not surprising that I wrap up this year's birthday wishes with yours. It is a pointer to how great a personality you are.
As you increase in age, may the Keeper of Israel cause you to also increase in strength, grace and influence. May He continue to enlarge your coast with the passing of each day in 2017. And may your 2017 be far more glorious than your 2016 and previous years put together.

Happy Birthday Rt. Hon. Medlin Elochukwu

REPORTS FROM HOUSE SITTING

OFFICE OF THE INFORMATION OFFICER
STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA

REPORTS FROM HOUSE SITTING

The sitting which was scheduled to start at 4:00pm, Sunday, 11/12/2016, started at about some minutes past 5:00pm due to some hitches.
After the house was called to order, the Deputy Clerk of the House read the minute of the last sitting before the Acting Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tete Lilian brought up the notice of alleged misconduct served the President by the House and the Vote of No Confidence on him by the executives. These were read by the Deputy Clerk after which a motion to investigate the matter was passed and ready by the Acting Speaker.
It was at the point of calling for votes to either investigate the matter or not that Hon. Phillip started a rowdy session which took time to get quelled. This gave room for some cultists who had been hanging around to come in and add to the noise while beating up some House members. It is believed that these cultists and political thugs were invited by the President because he personally drove them back to their destination with the Union's bus after they had fulfilled their missions of both disruption of House sitting and beating up of some Union officials.
The situation was brought under control after a while. However each time the vote was counted, there was a deliberate disruption of the sitting by some non-House members. Even some past leaders of the Union and some NANS officials aided the cult boys, dragging out some of the executives and members of the House to be beaten up. To this effect, men of the security department advised that the sitting should not continue until another day, leading House members and other Union officials out of the venue of the sitting. Some of those who were beaten sustained various degrees of injury while others were threatened.

Since the matter could not be concluded today. It is believed that the House will reconvene at a later date to continue from where it stopped.

RIPPLES IN THE UNION

OFFICE OF THE INFORMATION OFFICER
STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA

RIPPLES IN THE UNION

The past week has been one of turmoil for the Union as there seems to be efforts towards total checkmating of some excesses in the Union.

First was the suspension of the Speaker of the House of Representatives on grounds of misconduct and misappropriation of funds. The case, as at this time is still under investigation as the Committee set up to investigate the matter is yet to report back to the House.

Currently, there is another issue bordering on alleged misconduct, misappropriation of funds and mismanagement of Union's Property against the President of the Union, Comr. Chukwu Emmanuel. As it is constitutional, the House of Representatives which is the watchdog of the Union is slated to sit soon so as to decide on whether or not the allegations are worth investigation.

Thus, all eyes are on the Honourable Members of the House of Representatives to see the role they play in this case. As a matter of interest to the Union, we will keep you posted as regards the House sittings and resolutions on this and other matters.

FIRST YEAR ORIENTATION DAY 1

FIRST YEAR ORIENTATION DAY 1

It was a day of overwhelming joy for first year students of the university as they converged at Ekpo Convocation Arena for the orientation.
Truthfully, there has never been a first year orientation like we had it today as officials of the university administration were fully represented.
Presentations were made by various officials like the Director, Medical Services, Chief Security Officer, Mr. Nwachindu of History and International Studies, etc.

The program lasted from 9:00am to about 4:00pm and the students were well taken care of. You could see the joy in the Dean of Student Affairs Department as she happily provided for her students.
Also, the joy was extended to the boys at Franco Republic as they had their share of the meal for the event.

I want to personally thank the Dean of Student Affairs and her team of hardworking officials like the Senior Assistant Registrar of the Department among others. God bless you all richly.

To all first years, please remember that tomorrow is another day. Please remember that the orientation is both important and *COMPULSORY* for all first year students and it holds tomorrow as follows:

Date: Tuesday, December 6th, 2016
Venue: Ekpo Convocation Arena
Time: 8:00am

SPEAKER, HOUSE OF REPS SUSPENDED

Following a notice of alleged misconduct served the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emenike Victor C., the House of Representatives at her sitting on Monday, 5th December, 2016 at the Students' Union Building suspended the Speaker.

Also, a seven-man committee was set up after a recess by the House to investigate the matter and report back within 21 days.

Unfortunately however, there was serious interference by the Security Department of the University as security men came to disrupt the sitting on the premise that the security department was not notified about the meeting. All efforts to explain that it was an emergency which could go without such notifications met deaf ears.

Since the House had concluded all necessary matters on her agenda for the day, the sitting ended with members chanting solidarity songs as they dispersed.
We expect that the Committee set up to investigate the matter will report back as soon as possible.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UNIQUE TWINS OF THE UNION

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UNIQUE TWINS

At first I got confused about their identity
It isn't easy spotting the difference between them
Met one in Biological Sciences and the other in the Social Sciences
To the other I said, "How about what we discussed earlier"
She looked at me, confused while I felt lost
Did she forget so soon?
What could be amiss?
Then I "reminded" her but she said
"Maybe you spoke with my sister, not me"

You would see one in Okpara and the other in Balewa
And you would be wondering
"How did she get here so soon"
This is the funny situation a number of us faced during the last electoral processes as we pursued our political ambitions
Until I found out that there were two Njezes
Separated by faculties and some times by hostel allocation
They remain bound by the one soul in two bodies
They take it personal when it has to do with enthroning quality leadership
To them, it is not about how much you can offer but how well you can serve

Though I still cannot differentiate between you two
It doesn't matter anyway
I remain grateful to you for the stunt you pulled across faculties to bring myself and my colleagues this far
Even after our victories
You remained there in advisory roles
Supporting as much as you can till date

I may not be able to pay you back
Neither may we the current executives of the Union
But trust me when I say
Your impact in our lives will not be forgotten in a hurry
Together we say,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
CHIOMA AND OLUCHI NJEZE
May the Lord lead you to His predestined place of rest for you
May your future be blessed beyond imagination

Ad multos annos!!!
